The Duomo in Florence stands tall at the center of the city, and the first time you see it in person, it is sure to take your breath away. I remember coming around a corner from a street without a view of it, and as soon as it stood before me, its majesty was stunning.
Although this post is a bit of a throwback, since I visited in the spring of 2018, it is fun to look back on this experience. This cathedral is gorgeous and it's crazy to think that its design dates back to the beginning of its construction in1296. However, it was not completed until1436.
The first full day we had in Florence, we got to climb to the top of the dome. To be honest, it was a bit scary as we had to walk around the base of the dome on the inside and climb a total of 463 steps. However, you do get a beautiful and up-close view of the frescos on the dome.
Along the way to the top, you can glimpse small views of the city through windows. People also place coins in the window like a wish in a well.
At the top, you have a full view of the city. There is a walkway that goes all the way around the dome with some binoculars so you can take a closer look at anything that may interest you. I was in awe of the colors and the quaintness of the city that spread out before me. It is especially striking because all the buildings in Florence are only a couple of stories, with the exception of the Duomo.
Be sure to take a panorama before you leave!
On the way out you will also see some classical statues.
So, go for the adventure, stay for the views, and never be afraid to dillydally!
