Reclassed Glass

Updated: Jul 27, 2021

I don't know about you, but there is no glass recycling around where I live. This seems so crazy to me. I wanted to find a way to recycle glass so that it could still be functional in everyday life, and thus, I created Reclassed Glass.

Since I play gigs at local wineries, I see a lot of bottles that are thrown away weekly. So, I decided to make something out of them. I took the wine bottles and created self-watering planters. I also began slumping beer and topo chico bottles into trays.

I cut the bottle in half and grind the edges down. I also use recycled corks to plug the planter. The cotton rope then wicks up the water from the bottom of the planter and the plant only uses the water that it needs. It can be used for succulents or a small herb garden.

Here is a quick look into how I make the planters:

I slump the smaller bottles in a kiln and use a ceramic mold for them to get their shape. It takes about 15 hours for one to finish slumping. The trays can be used to hold your keys, serve food, as a spoon rest, or as a soap dish!

I got to set up at a local market a few weeks ago and people really seemed to like them.

I hope to be able to create other items with glass in the future!

So, go for the experience, stay for the succulents, and never forget to dillydally!
