Counting Sheep in San Angelo

If you've ever been to San Angelo, you may have noticed that there are a lot of artistically decorated sheep statues around town. What you may not know is that San Angelo was once known as the wool capital of the world. Yet, there is much more that San Angelo has to offer than just sheep.

The sheep across town were placed in 2007. Each sheep is painted by a local artist and it represents a certain area or business in the town. Personally, I made it my mission to find as many as possible during my short time in the town.

What would have made it a bit easier, however, is this site with all the sheep locations... that I found after we left town.

Apart from the sheep, there are a lot of other artistic places in San Angelo. For example, there are various mosaic pieces across town. This includes a fire truck, fully covered in mosaics in a park by the old firehouse, a VW bug, also covered in mosaics under a bridge, and an old truck decorated the same way.

There were also a few mosaic benches around town.

Along with the mosaics, there is a place in San Angelo called Pop Art Museum, which has a bunch of interactive modern art pieces. It includes oil barrels painted to look like Campbell soup cans, painting over the Mona Lisa, a giant spray can, and more! There is also a sheep there... if you're counting.

I also recommend you stop by Paintbrush Alley, even though somehow we missed that spot.

There is also an old train depot in town that was turned into a museum. The trains outside were open and so, I decided to go explore. All aboard the South Orient!

San Angelo is also home to the International Waterlily Collection. It is absolutely beautiful and open to the public free of charge. Be sure to stop by this relaxing spot on the way out of town, and explore the neighboring park to find a gentle stream and lovely bridge thorough the woods.

There are also some cool shops and Hotels in San Angelo. You can grab dinner at Miss Hattie's, head to The Latest Scoop for dessert, and then stay the night at the Pearl on the Concho.

And don't forget to stop by the famous Fort Concho and take in its rich history before heading out of town!

So, go for the experience, stay for the sheep, and never forget to dillydally!

P.S. My mom and I also stopped at the corner of SMU and Baylor Ave. (since I currently attend SMU and my mom is a Baylor alumna!)
